Nightingale Hammerson – Caring for the Community for over 185 Years

Nightingale Hammerson has cared for the Jewish community for over 185 years.  The charity originated in 1840 in London’s East End, through the formation of three smaller charities, becoming the Home for Aged Jews.  In 1904, a Jewish philanthropist, Lord Wandsworth, donated a large country estate, located just off Wandsworth Common – on the condition they moved from the pollution and grime of the East End to the relative countryside of south west London.  The home became known as Nightingale House and is a much loved part of the community, supporting families and providing outstanding care for their loved ones.  In 2012 Nightingale House merged with Hammerson House to become Nightingale Hammerson.  It is a great testament to the Hammerson family that their vision of providing outstanding care for the Jewish community can continue.

How Nightingale Hammerson’s Therapies Team Enhances Residents’ Well-being

Exceptional care is more than medical support; it is about nurturing the whole person.

Central to the commitment of outstanding clinical care is the Therapies Team, a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team divided into four specialist areas: Nutrition, Clinical Psychology, Pharmaceutical and Physiotherapy. Together, our therapists play a vital role in supporting the health, vitality and independence of every Resident.

Supporting Nutrition and Well-being

Where additional support is required with eating, drinking or swallowing, the dietitian observes mealtimes and recommends practical solutions, such as the use of specialised crockery and cutlery. This is an essential part of the care we provide to ensure the well-being and independence of our Residents.

Supporting Mental Health

In an innovative step for the care sector, Nightingale Hammerson recently appointed a Clinical Psychologist and her team of trainees to provide dedicated in-house psychological support to Residents, their families and care teams. We are one of the only care homes in the UK to do so.

Research shows that the levels of depression in the care home population is higher than the general population. Dr Ally’s team works closely with Residents and families, offering compassionate and evidence-based care to address the higher levels of depression often seen in care homes.

Pharmaceutical Support

Our pharmacy technician has worked with us for over 15 years and is the bridge between our homes and GP’s. She ensures optimal care, particularly in relation to palliative care. Nicola reviews the medications for all new Residents and those discharged from hospital, allowing the care teams to focus on personal connection and comfort. Medication training and competency assessments for the teams are undertaken in-house, saving the NHS time and money.

Physiotherapy Support

Physical activity and mobility are essential to maintaining confidence, independence and quality of life in later years. The physiotherapy team provides tailored therapy sessions from group exercises to one-to-one mobility programmes, even for those confined to their rooms.

We are committed to providing best practice and the highly skilled care our Residents deserve. As a charity, we are able to offer financial support to members of the Jewish community who are unable to meet the full cost of care.
